How do I purchase an article or book chapter on SpringerLink?

It is possible to purchase single journal articles or book chapters online from SpringerLink. SpringerLink does not offer whole eBooks or electronic reference works.

If you are on a search result page or on an article/chapter abstract page you will see the option to open the article in PDF or HTML. If you are not an authorized user, you will be prompted to purchase the article after clicking on the PDF or HTML icon and link. At this point, you have the option to log into an individual account to verify a subscription or associate your purchase to your SpringerLink account.

SpringerLink recommends that you log into an individual account prior to article/chapter purchase so that your "Order History" retains a link to your purchased article and copy of your invoice.

After clicking the "Buy Now" button on the article abstract page or on your shopping cart page, you will go through a series of steps to purchase the article on our secure server.

Immediately after you have completed the purchase, you will see the invoice page, which offers a link to the article by clicking on the title. If you are logged in as an individual user during this session the article purchase and direct link will be stored in your "Order History".

Note: You need to be logged in as an individual, not as a guest, in order to store the article in your "Order History." If you purchase an article as a guest, then you must download the article directly after purchase before closing your browser window.

What if I purchase an article as a Guest?

If you purchase your article as a “Guest,” then you must open and download your article directly after purchase from the “Check Out Confirmation” page. On the “Confirmation” page, please click on the article title. Full text options are available on the article abstract page while you are on the site in the current session. When you close the browser window, you will close your immediate access.

Options for Guest Purchase:

We understand that you may want to associate your “Guest” purchase to an individual account after article purchase. You have two chances to do this after article purchase. If you associate your purchased article to an individual account, you will retain access to your purchased article, which will always be available to you in your “Order History.”

  1. Associate Article Purchase on “Confirmation” Page: directly after purchase, at the top of the page, you are given the chance either to log into a pre-existing individual account or to create a new account to associate the purchase to an “Order History.” This way, SpringerLink can identify that an article purchase belongs to you. When you log into your account in the future, you will be able to access your article via your “Order History. Please use the options at the top of the “Order Details” page to complete the article association process.

  2. Associate Article Purchase from Email Notification: SpringerLink sends an automatic email notification to you directly after purchase. If you have purchased your article as a “Guest,” then the email notification informs you of this and offers a link for you to follow either to log into a pre-existing individual account or to create a new account to associate the purchase with the “Order History.”

If you have purchased an article as a “Guest” and experienced computer problems or closed your browser window, please contact MetaPress: support@metapress.com.

Is there an inexpensive alternative to purchasing an article, if I only need limited access?

For some articles, you will find the DeepDyve article rental option in addition to the article purchase option. When clicking the DeepDyve “Rent Now” button, you will leave SpringerLink to visit the DeepDyve site where you can rent access to the article for a limited period of time.

Rented articles are only available on DeepDyve. Rented articles cannot be printed or downloaded, but you can open the article as many times as you need for your research during the rental period. Complete rental details are located at DeepDyve.
