How do I set up an OpenURL link resolver?

An administrator will access the Admin Site (http://admin.metapress.com) and click on "Linkout" on the left toolbar. Next, an Admin will click "Add a New Link" in the Current Links section. There is a box on the next page to enter the Target URL from the Linkout service. It is recommended that Admins click on the "URL Builder" to help them create custom links from their resources. There are simple "Add" boxes for various linking levels to help create the URL that is needed.

An Admin can select rules and then must save the links to enable Linkout on SpringerLink. Icons and labels can be added on the Link Settings page. Links can always be edited and rank can be adjusted after completing the set up. If more assistance is needed the help link on the admin site is very useful.

While many publishers and vendors offer a simple set-up where the library can enter the target URL and link label for link resolver linking, MetaPress offers an enhanced Linkout that allows a library to select specific metadata placeholders.

Please note that Linkout does not work with ISBN, so it does not work from book level content.

Can I use SFX with SpringerLink?

SFX is a linking technology that facilitates context-sensitive linking between different web resources (full text, abstracting, indexing and citation databases, OPACs, ILL, document delivery systems, and search engines) allows such resources to function as a cohesive reference system.

SpringerLink is currently SFX enabled. Please contact your Springer licensing manager with any questions.

How do I create Shibboleth WAYFless URLs for SpringerLink?

You can create WAYFless URLs that take users directly to resources and bypass the Shibboleth WAYF (Where Are You From) login step directly on SpringerLink. In order to create a WAYFless URL for SpringerLink, you must know your institution’s Shibboleth EntityID. The EntityID is a string that uniquely identifies the institution’s Identity Provider service. For instance, below, the institution “Protect Network” has defined their EntityID in the form of a URL string:

https://idp.protectnetwork.org/protectnetwork-idp

The WAYFless URL is created by appending a URL-encoded EntityID to the end of a SpringerLink resource direct link, such as the following that takes the user to an article in NanoEthics:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/c02056n7338411w6/

Append the direct link with the EntityID by adding "?entityid=" to the end of the direct link. The EntityID should be encoded like the following:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/c02056n7338411w6&entityid=https%3A%2F%2Fidp.protectnetwork.org%2Fprotectnetwork-idp

The above link will send a user to the Protect Network library login page and then, once signed in, take the user directly to the content.
